The Anatomy of the Apron

An old Viennese harmonium. Kotykiewicz. A prestigious maker.

At first glance, the keyboard appears to be made entirely of ivory.
Looking more closely, a small inconsistency appears.

The flat tops of the keys are indeed covered in ivory. The vertical fronts, known as the aprons, are not. They are wood, painted cream to match the material above.

This was a common compromise among makers of keyboard instruments.
Ivory was expensive.
Paint was not.

What caught my attention was not the compromise itself, but the moment it became visible.

On the outermost left key, the paint does not fully conceal the construction beneath. Whether through age or application, the illusion softens and the wood begins to show through.

Suddenly, the keyboard is no longer simply a keyboard. It becomes a lesson in how it was made. Lovely.

We often think of heritage as something found in grand gestures, rare materials, or perfect craftsmanship.

Yet sometimes the most revealing detail is a small imperfection.

Not the ivory.
